This is a PSA to all business owners. Followers do not equal customers.
I am going to repeat that, because it is that important. Followers do not equal customers.
You can have as many followers as you would like. But I am telling you, if they are not your target audience, and you are not posting content that is relevant to your target audience, that most likely means they are not going to buy the product or service you are selling. A big number on your profile is not a line of customers waiting to pay you. So worry less about the numbers, and worry more about the right people seeing your content. In this post, I will show you why the right audience beats a big audience every time, and how to actually reach them.
Let me start with the hard truth behind the PSA. A follower is not a customer. A follower is a person who tapped a button once. That is all you actually know about them.
You could have fifty thousand followers and an empty calendar if those followers are not the people who need what you sell. Big numbers feel like success, but they do not pay your bills. I would take five hundred followers who are exactly my target audience over fifty thousand who will never buy, every single day. One of those numbers is a business. The other is just a number.
I had a client in Toronto with an impressive follower count who could not understand why almost no one was buying. When we looked closely, most of those followers had come from a fun, unrelated viral post. They were not her target audience at all. The number looked great. The wrong audience behind it was the whole problem.
Summary: A follower is just someone who tapped a button, not a customer. A huge following of the wrong people will not pay your bills, while a small, relevant audience can.
Here is the proof that targeting beats volume. When you reach the right, high-intent people, they convert at dramatically higher rates than untargeted numbers ever will.
Look at the data. According to HubSpot, leads that come from search have a 14.6% close rate, compared to just 1.7% for untargeted outbound outreach. That makes the right, intent-driven people roughly 8.5 times more likely to become customers. Think about what that means. It is not about reaching more people. It is about reaching the right people, the ones who actually want what you offer. A thousand of the right people will out-earn a hundred thousand of the wrong ones.
So the goal was never to be seen by everyone. The goal is to be seen by the people who are ready to buy.
Summary: The right people convert far better than raw numbers. Search leads close at 14.6% versus 1.7% for untargeted outreach, making the right audience about 8.5 times more likely to buy.
So how do you attract the right people instead of just more people? You post content that is genuinely relevant to your target audience.
This starts with actually knowing who your target audience is. Who are they, what do they struggle with, and what are they trying to solve? When you create content that speaks directly to those real needs, you attract the people who have those needs, the ones who can become clients. When you post generic content designed to please everyone, you attract no one in particular, and no one in particular ever buys. Relevance is a filter. It draws in the right people and naturally lets the wrong ones scroll on by, which is exactly what you want.
So stop trying to make content that appeals to the masses. Make content that is unmistakably for your person.
Summary: Relevance beats reach. Know your target audience and create content that speaks to their real needs, which attracts the right people and naturally filters out those who would never buy.
Here is my favorite way to reach the right audience, because it works while you sleep. Search engine optimization.
Think about who is typing your service into Google. They are not random followers who wandered in from a funny video. They are people actively looking for exactly what you offer, which makes them your target audience by definition. That is why SEO leads convert so well. The intent is already there. When your website is properly optimized, you stop hoping the right people stumble across your posts and start being found by them at the precise moment they are searching. A good SEO company or SEO agency builds your site so the right, high-intent people find you on purpose, not by accident. That is targeted reach that compounds over time, and it does not depend on a follower count at all.
Summary: Search engine optimization attracts people already searching for what you offer, making them your target audience by default. A good SEO company helps the right, high-intent people find you on purpose, independent of follower counts.
Reaching the right people is only half the job. Once they arrive, your website has to turn that right person into a customer.
When a member of your actual target audience lands on your site, it needs to speak directly to them, answer their questions, and make the next step obvious. That is what strong website design does. Good web design is built around your ideal customer, guiding exactly the right person from interested to convinced without friction. A skilled web developer makes sure the right visitor finds what they need fast and feels confident choosing you. Your followers live on a platform you do not own. Your website is where the right audience actually becomes paying customers, so it deserves more of your attention than your follower count ever will.
Summary: Reaching the right people is only half of it. Strong website design and a capable web developer turn the right visitor into a customer, which matters far more than a follower count on a platform you do not own.
The same principle, the right people over big numbers, should guide every channel you use.
Build an email list through email marketing services, because the people who hand you their email are showing real interest, which makes a small targeted list more valuable than a huge passive following. If you run paid ads or PPC campaigns, use them to reach your exact target audience on purpose, which is the entire advantage of targeted advertising over chasing broad vanity reach. When a social media manager handles your social media management, make sure they are posting content built for your target audience, not just content designed to rack up the biggest numbers. And if you are not sure who your right audience even is yet, that is exactly what a marketing consultant, fractional CMO, or some marketing support can help you define, and what marketing training and corporate marketing training can teach you. Whether you do it in-house or with a marketing agency or digital marketing agency, aim every channel at the right people.
Summary: Aim every channel at the right people. Build a targeted email list, use paid ads to reach your exact audience, post relevant content, and lean on a marketing consultant or marketing agency to define and reach your target audience.
Followers do not equal customers. I will say it one more time, because it might save you a lot of wasted effort. Followers do not equal customers.
You can grow your numbers as high as you want, but if those people are not your target audience and your content is not relevant to them, they are not going to buy. So take your eyes off the follower count and put them where they belong, on reaching the right people with content made for them, getting found in search by people already looking for you, and turning those right visitors into customers on your website.
Worry less about the numbers. Worry more about the right people seeing your content. That is what actually fills your calendar.
