Founder & Chief Executive Officer
The other day I was celebrating with a client, because we got him listed on Google’s AI Overview. And honestly? We did not expect it to happen that quickly.
Here is why the speed surprised us. He is in a very niche market, and it is also a very competitive one. There are a lot of players paying to sit at the top of the results, and plenty of them have a much larger search engine optimization budget than he does. So getting him cited by Google’s AI that fast was a genuine win.
Naturally, he asked me the big question: what worked? And I told him the truth. The one thing I was aggressive about was you writing blogs. We can handle all the technical search engine optimization. We can follow every rule Google wants, plus the ones that matter more for the generative, AI side of things. But there is one thing we cannot do for him, and it turned out to be the thing that mattered most. In this post, I will explain exactly what got him onto the AI Overview so fast, and how you can do the same.
Let me quickly explain what we are celebrating, in case AI Overview is a new term for you. An AI Overview is the AI-generated answer box that now appears at the very top of Google for a huge and growing number of searches. Instead of just listing links, Google writes a summary answer and cites a handful of sources inside it.
Being one of those cited sources is a big deal, because you appear above the regular results, at the exact moment someone is looking for an answer. And this is not a small, fringe feature anymore. AI Overviews now appear in over half of all searches, up from just 18% earlier in 2025. That is a massive shift in how people find businesses, and getting cited is quickly becoming one of the most valuable places you can show up online.
Summary An AI Overview is the AI-generated answer box at the top of Google that cites a few sources. It now appears in over half of searches, so being cited puts you in front of people before the regular results even begin.
What made this win so satisfying was who he was up against. My client is not the biggest name in his space, and he does not have the deepest pockets.
His market is both niche and fiercely competitive, with established players paying to hold the top spots and spending far more on their SEO than he does. On paper, they should win. But here is something important about AI search that a lot of people do not realize. A niche site that becomes the definitive, genuinely helpful authority on its specific topic regularly outperforms bigger, better-funded competitors when it comes to AI citations. AI does not simply hand the spot to whoever spent the most. It looks for the most genuinely useful, trustworthy answer. That leveled the playing field for my client in a way a bidding war never would have.
Summary My client is not the biggest or best-funded player in his niche, competitive market. But AI search rewards the most genuinely helpful, authoritative source on a topic, so a focused niche site can beat competitors with far bigger budgets.
So what did we actually do? We got aggressive about blogging. More aggressive than most people would expect.
When he asked me what worked, this was my honest answer. I pushed him to write a lot more blogs than a typical plan calls for, and to do it consistently. Not a post here and there, but a steady, committed stream of genuinely helpful content answering the real questions his market was asking. AI search rewards fresh, consistent, question-answering content, so the more helpful, current material he published, the more surface area he gave Google’s AI to find, trust, and cite him. The blogs were the fuel. Everything else was just the engine.
Summary The one thing I was aggressive about was blogging, far more than a typical plan expects. A steady stream of genuinely helpful blogs answering his market’s real questions gave Google’s AI more to find, trust,
and cite.
Now here is the heart of it, the piece that made all the difference. I told my client plainly: we can do the technical search engine optimization, but what we cannot do is write your client stories for you.
And that turned out to be everything. AI search does not just reward content that exists. It rewards content that shows real, first-hand experience. Semrush’s 2025 analysis found that essentially all of the top-cited AI Overview pages show strong experience and expertise signals, and after Google’s 2026 update, genuine experience became the single most important signal, valued even above traditional authority and links. Read that again. The real stories, the actual client situations, the lessons only he has lived through, that first-hand experience is exactly what AI wants to cite. And it is the one thing no agency, no tool, and no competitor’s budget can manufacture. His stories were his unfair advantage, because only he could tell them.
Summary An agency can do the technical SEO, but it cannot write your first-hand stories. AI search now rewards genuine experience above almost everything else, so the real client stories only my client could tell are exactly what got him cited.
I do not want you to think technical work does not count, because it absolutely does. We did all of it. It just is not the whole picture.
We followed every technical search engine optimization rule Google looks for, and we layered on the practices that matter more for the generative, AI side of things, structuring his content so it is easy for AI to extract and cite. That is what AI optimization for websites really means, making genuinely helpful content technically readable and citable by AI engines. But here is the order that matters. The technical work is the engine, and your authentic content is the fuel. A beautifully tuned engine with no fuel goes nowhere. That is why a good SEO company handles the technical and AI optimization side, then leans on you for the stories only you can tell. Both halves working together are what got him cited so fast.
Summary Technical SEO and AI optimization for websites matter, and we did all of it, structuring his content to be easily cited by AI. But the technical work is the engine and your authentic content is the fuel, so both halves must work together.
So how do you put this to work for your own business? The path is simpler than most people make it, though it does take commitment.
Publish consistent, genuinely helpful blogs that answer the real questions your market is asking, and weave in your first-hand stories and experience, because that is what AI rewards most. Those blogs live on your website, so make sure your site is fast, clean, and easy for both people and AI to read. Let a good SEO company or SEO agency handle the technical search engine optimization and the AI optimization for websites, since they can do that part expertly, but stay involved and give them your stories, because that is the piece only you can provide. And notice the contrast with my client’s competitors. They were paying to sit at the top, while he earned an AI citation through authentic content. If you want help mapping this out, a marketing consultant, fractional CMO, or steady marketing support can guide the plan, and whether you build it in-house or with a marketing agency, the winning formula is the same. Technical excellence plus your real, human stories.
Summary Publish consistent, helpful blogs woven with your first-hand stories, keep your website fast and readable, and let an SEO company handle the technical and AI optimization side. Technical excellence plus your real stories is the formula that earns AI citations.
We got my client cited on Google’s AI Overview fast, in a niche and competitive market, against players with much bigger budgets. And when he asked what worked, the honest answer was his blogs.
We handled the technical search engine optimization and the AI optimization. But the thing that set him apart was the one thing we could never do for him: tell his real stories. AI search rewards genuine first-hand experience above almost everything else, and that is something no budget can buy and no agency can fake. His authentic, consistent, story-driven blogs are exactly what got him up there so quickly.
So if you want to show up in AI search, write your stories. Publish them consistently. That is the advantage no competitor can copy.
