Have you ever heard the quote, comparison is the thief of joy?

This is something I tell my clients a lot, especially when they start comparing themselves to other people on social media. So I am going to pass it on to you, because it might be exactly what you need to hear today.

It really does not matter what somebody else is doing online. Unless they are your literal doppelganger, you do not need to worry about them. Even if they are in your exact industry, you are unique, you are yourself, and that is one of the most important things you can be online, authentically you. So do not worry about them and what they are doing. You do not know their circumstances. You have no information beyond what you see, and what you see online is often filtered, often scripted, and often does not show what is happening behind the camera. So just worry about you. Let me show you how, and where to put that energy instead.

The Short Version

1. Comparison steals your joy and your focus

That old quote is right, but I want to add something to it. Comparison does not just steal your joy. It steals your focus, and for a business owner, focus is everything.

Every minute you spend studying a competitor’s feed, counting their followers, or wondering why their post did better than yours is a minute you are not spending on your own business. It pulls your eyes off your own road and onto someone else’s, and that is exactly how you drift, stall, or lose your confidence. The comparison feels productive, like research. It is not. It is just worry wearing a disguise.

I had a client in Calgary who was so fixated on a competitor that she had practically stopped building her own brand. The day she stopped watching them and put that energy back into her own work, everything started moving again. Nothing about the competitor had changed. Her focus had.

Summary: Comparison steals both your joy and your focus. Time spent studying competitors is time not spent on your own business, and it quietly drains confidence and momentum.

2. What you see online is not the full story

Here is the thing that makes comparison so unfair. You are comparing your real, behind-the-scenes life to someone else’s carefully edited highlight reel.

What you see online is often filtered, often scripted, and often staged. People show the win, not the work. The launch, not the months of silence. The polished reel, not the ten takes and the stress behind it. And people are increasingly aware of this. In one UK survey, 42% of adults said social media influencers should stop editing their posts, and 37% said they want to see more real, unedited content. We all know the feed is curated, and yet we still compare ourselves to it as if it were real.

So when you look at a competitor and feel behind, remember you are looking at their trailer, not their movie. You are measuring your full, messy reality against their best two seconds.

Summary: Online content is filtered, scripted, and staged, showing wins instead of the work. People know it is curated, yet still compare against it, which means comparing your full reality to someone’s best edited moment.

3. You do not know their circumstances

This is the part that should really set you free. You have no idea what is actually going on behind that competitor’s profile.

That business with the slick brand might be drowning in debt. That person posting constant wins might be exhausted, unhappy, or about to close their doors. The big follower count might be full of people who never buy. You simply do not have that information, because no one posts it. You are filling in the blanks with a story you invented, and that invented story is almost always more flattering to them and more unfair to you than the truth.

You cannot make smart decisions about your own business by guessing at someone else’s hidden reality. So stop guessing, and stop comparing your known struggles to their unknown ones.

Summary: You never see a competitor’s real circumstances, debt, exhaustion, or empty follower counts, because no one posts those. Comparing your known struggles to their hidden reality is guesswork that is always unfair to you.

4. You are unique, and that is your advantage

Here is the good news underneath all of this. Even if someone is in your exact industry, they are not you, and that is your single biggest advantage.

Your story, your voice, your perspective, the specific way you treat your clients, none of that can be copied. Being authentically you is not a backup plan for when you cannot out-do a competitor. It is the entire point. People do not choose between you and a competitor on a spreadsheet. They choose the one who feels like the right fit, and no one can be your kind of right fit except you. So instead of trying to be a slightly worse version of someone else, lean all the way into being the best version of you.

Summary: Even competitors in your industry are not you, and that is your advantage. Your story, voice, and perspective cannot be copied, so being authentically you is the point, not a fallback.

5. Redirect that energy: build your own foundation

Now let me give that freed-up energy somewhere powerful to go. Instead of watching competitors, build the things you actually own.

Pour that focus into your website, the home base that is entirely yours and entirely under your control. Thoughtful website design built by a capable web developer does far more for your business than any amount of competitor-watching ever will. Pour it into your search engine optimization, so the right people find you when they search, regardless of what anyone else is posting. Good SEO, often with help from an SEO company or SEO agency, builds you a steady stream of the right traffic that no competitor’s viral moment can take away. And pour it into your email list through email marketing services, so you own a direct line to your audience. These are the assets that compound quietly while you stop worrying about everyone else. Comparison builds nothing. Your own foundation builds everything.

Summary: Redirect comparison energy into assets you own. Invest in your website design, your search engine optimization with an SEO company, and your email list, since these compound over time while competitor-watching builds nothing.

6. How to actually run your own race

Knowing you should stop comparing and actually doing it are different things, so here is how to make it practical across your marketing.

Mute or unfollow the accounts that trigger the comparison spiral, even competitors, because you do not need a daily dose of that. Define your own goals and track your own progress, so you are measuring yourself against where you were, not against someone else’s highlight reel. If a social media manager handles your social media management, let them watch the landscape so you do not have to doom-scroll the competition yourself. Focus your paid ads and your own metrics on your goals, not on matching someone else’s spend. And if you want help staying in your own lane with a clear plan, a marketing consultant, fractional CMO, or steady marketing support can keep you focused, just as marketing training and corporate marketing training can build your confidence. Whether you do it yourself or with a marketing agency or digital marketing agency, run your race, not theirs.

Summary: Make it practical: mute comparison triggers, set your own goals, and track your own progress. Let social media management watch the landscape for you, and lean on a marketing consultant or marketing agency to stay focused on your own lane.

The bottom line

Comparison is the thief of joy, and it is the thief of your focus too.

It really does not matter what anyone else is doing online. Unless they are your doppelganger, you do not need to worry about them. You do not know their circumstances, and what you see is filtered, scripted, and edited anyway. You are unique, you are yourself, and being authentically you is the most valuable thing you can be. So take all that energy you have been spending watching everyone else, and pour it into your own brand, your own website, and your own foundation instead.

Just worry about you. That is where your business actually grows.
